Cedar Chest Reborn

Frank gave Kathleen a cedar chest when he asked her to marry him in 1967.  The first picture is of that cedar chest.   It had a low profile with a walnut finish, a fake leather top, some simple molding on the front with exposed ball casters.

Through the next 37 years the cedar chest would have a rough existence.   Dogs chewed the front molding and the leather.  The chest went through at least one major flood down in New Orleans, LA,  seven dogs, three children, and seven moves from Louisiana, to Florida, to Virginia, back to Louisiana, to Texas, to New Jersey, finally to North Carolina.

The second picture shows the chest in poor condition and with a replacement cloth top put on by Kathleen one day when she just could not stand looking at the sad ripped up fake leather anymore.

Frank and Kathleen  just could not throw out this sad looking family keep sake.  It had those special memories. Finally, in 2004,  Frank decided to refinish the chest.  The decision was made to change the style somewhat, so the old chewed up molding was removed, the walnut veneer was sanded and new moldings were glued onto the existing veneer.  Picture #3 shows the gluing process and picture #4 shows the new style with it’s new hidden casters.

Frank made and attached a new thicker fabric upholstered foam top and after many hours of sanding finished the walnut wood surface with four coats of Barley wipe on poly.

Frank and Kathleen are very happy with the way the cedar chest came out. They have saved a part of their past for many years to come.
