Bob Sauer

Bob first learned about woodworking spending time with his grandfather in the 1940s and about fine woods when he was given a birdseye maple cabinet, made from old stair treads, for his stamp collection.  His own woodworking started about 1965 when he moved to Wilmington, DE, to work for DuPont as a research chemist.  A local cabinet maker gave him some free tutoring in making his first real project in the form of a walnut cabriole leg coffee table and other co-workers at DuPont offered continuing encouragement.  Not being able to afford new furniture or many power tools led to learning about furniture construction while restoring affordable antiques and collecting useable classic hand tools.

A move to Granville, OH, provided a 10' x 10' shop that would do for the next 35 years. In spite of the close quarters, adaptations of classic American furniture designs like footstools, a small chest of drawers, a Chippendale mirror and candle boxes were made between research assignments for Owens-Corning Fiberglas. Restoring structurally sound older pieces of furniture also continued.  Finally, coming to Hickory in June, 2006, was dictated by three grandchildren living here and finding a new town home with a basement, part of which would afford a 25' x 25' shop with room to store the walnut (bought from the Boyertown Burial Casket Co.[!] in PA years ago), tiger maple and miscellaneous old boards found at auctions in Ohio.
